FAQ's - Summer/Winter

Who does the Double H Serve?
Summer Residential Camp serves children dealing with a life-threatening illness ages 6 - 16 and their families in need – these are children whose condition precludes their attendance at other camps.  The Adaptive Winter Sports Program serves children dealing with chronic and life-threatening illnesses ages 6-18 and their families. During the spring and fall our weekends our fully booked with Family-based Programs, providing physical and emotional support to children and their families.

Summer

How much does it cost to send my child to the Double H Ranch?
All of our campers attend the Double H Ranch for FREE!

Can siblings participate in the Double H Ranch Summer Residential Camp Program?
At this point, our summer camp program is only available to children that have a qualifying medical diagnosis. Siblings may be served through our fall and spring retreat weekends. Please contact our Admissions Office for more details.

Can I stay or visit with my child while he/she is at camp?
The Double H Ranch is a residential camp program for children age 6-16. Therefore, parents and family members are not allowed to stay at the Ranch but are more than welcome to stay close by. Visits are discouraged because not all campers have visitors and it is difficult to pull the child out of their scheduled program activities during the day/night.

If items are missing from the application, will I be notified?
Yes, a postcard will be sent home with the status of the child’s application and any missing items that are needed will be indicated.

How will I know when my child has been accepted to Double H Ranch?
Once the application has been approved by our Nursing Director, a confirmation packet will be sent home with your child’s summer session date. There will be forms in the packet that we would like returned to camp prior to your child’s arrival.  If there aren’t any changes to your child’s medication since the application was submitted, please disregard that form. 

How is transportation organized?
If the child is taking group transportation provided by the hospital, speak directly to the hospital for the travel schedule. Please indicate the hospital name on his/her application! Otherwise, transportation is the responsibility of the family (including bus or train ticket purchasing). If your child is taking a public bus or train to camp, please call the Admissions Office with your child’s arrival time/departure time so we have a counselor there to greet him/her.

What time should we arrive on the first day and depart on the last day of camp?
Arrival Day check-in is 10am-noon
Departure Day check-out is by 10am

My child is a first time camper. If I have more information to give the counselor’s than is listed on the application, when will I be able to talk to someone?
After completing registration, you will be able to go to the cabin and meet the counselors and volunteers that will be with your child all week. As you are helping your child move in, we encourage you to chat with the staff!   

Winter

How much does it cost for my child to participate in the Adaptive Winter Sports Program at the Double H Ranch?
All our students and their families participate for FREE!

Does my child need to bring their own ski/snowboard equipment?
The Double H Ranch provides each skier/snowboarder with the necessary equipment from our equipment room.  All participants are required to wear a helmet and snowboarders are required to wear wrist guards.

Will my child have a group or individual lesson?
Each participant is assigned a volunteer instructor and receives one on one instruction.

If I have more information to give to my child’s instructor than I listed on the application, will I be able to talk with someone?
Yes. You’ll be able to talk with your child’s ski/snowboard instructor(s) before your child hits the slopes and provide any additional information. 

Can siblings and other family members participate in the Adaptive Winter Sports Program?
Siblings and family members are welcome to hit the slopes only during one of our five Family Sleepover Weekends offered during the season.

If items are missing from the application, will I be notified?
The Admissions Office will contact you if there is any information missing from your child’s application.

How will I know when my child has been accepted to participate in the winter program?
Once the application has been approved by our Medical team and all student scheduling is complete, a confirmation packet will be sent home. Confirmation packets are mailed out the third week in December. There will be forms in the packet that we’d like sent back to camp before your child arrives for their first scheduled ski day.



When I bring kids to camp, they come with a variety of baggage that staff may or may not know about. The kids may be having health issues, their parents may not be doing well with their own diseases, or their home situations may be in disarray. The Double H is one place that they can count on to be predictable and stable. Whatever is going on in their lives, for one week they have the opportunity to be the focus of positive attention and just be kids. I've seen and experienced many magical moments there.
