I Want to be a Part of the Magic!

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

One of our favorite times of the year is here, interview season!! We are working hard to interview all of our potential Summer 2011 staff and volunteers. It is great to hear about how motivated and committed our potential staff and volunteers are about working at Double H for the summer. Each interview is a new opportunity to talk about camp and hear about what motivates people to work at such a magical place and with such amazing children.

“I want to be at a place where kids don’t have to hide their secrets.”

Our recruitment efforts have been focused on spreading the word through former staff, social media, online college job sites, and college visits. We have been extremely successful this season with a total of 350 staff applications for 100 summer positions. Our volunteer applications have totaled 460 this summer with more coming in everyday!

“I’m fascinated at the idea of working at a camp and being a part of an experience that kids remember for the rest of their life.”

Interviewing staff and volunteers allows us to all remember how we ourselves found out about camp, what got us involved and the excitement involved in being a part of this organization. When I interview someone, I leave the interview feeling energized and excited about what’s to come for Summer 2011. My mind is filled with t-shirt color choices, summer themes, camp wide game ideas and when to fit in our weekly trip to the Great Escape! Thank you to all of our applicants for continuing to motivate us in making camp the best experience for our campers!

Kids Helping Kids – Service Learning and Read for the Ranch

Friday, February 11th, 2011

It is that time of year again, to start looking forward to your schools support of the Double H Ranch! Last year over $30,000 was raised by students in support of our year-round programming and this year we are hoping the program will be even more successful. Schools are encouraged to start a Service Learning or Read for the Ranch program in order to raise funds and awareness for the Double H. By participating, your support will help us to continue to provide life-changing experiences for our children and their families.

By definition Character Education and Service Learning teaches children and adolescents important values including honesty, kindness, generosity, courage, equality, and respect. Each of these qualities are core to the mission of the Double H Ranch. As schools explore opportunities that instill values and character in their students finding a unique and creative solution can be difficult. The Double H Ranch has your answer!

Through Service Learning students are encouraged to develop and organize their own creative fundraisers to increase awareness and funds for the Double H. The hands-on experience will teach students valuable life lessons and build school spirit along with forming new relationships with their peers and advisors. Examples include a Walk-a-thon, Bake Sales, Car Wash, Cook-Off, or Read for the Ranch. The opportunities are endless.

The Read for the Ranch program is a great way to instill in students a love for reading and to teach them the value of giving back to a great cause! Students can raise funds and awareness for the Double H Ranch by asking friends and family to sponsor them to read. The Read for the Ranch program is extremely flexible and based on the needs of your school. It can begin and end as you see fit and run as long or as short as you prefer. You may also hold a one time reading event.

For more information on beginning a Service Learning program at your school or the Read for the Ranch program, please email Kimberly Checchia, Development and Communications Coordinator at kchecchia@doublehranch.org or call 518-696-5921 ext. 239.
