The Adaptive Winter Sports Program offers children 6-18 with chronic and/or life-threatening illnesses the opportunity to participate in various winter sports in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains. Activities include alpine and Nordic skiing, as well as snowboarding and snow shoeing. Each participant is matched up with at least one instructor and all of the necessary equipment is provided free of charge. Our Adaptive
Winter Sports Program is coordinated by Ranch staff, but the magic
that takes place on the slopes is made possible entirely through
the efforts of our many winter volunteers! All
of our Instructors are trained by the Double H Ranch through the
PSIA method. Our professional National Ski Patrol ensure safety on the slope, and our gracious Lodge Hosts make sure the fire is blazing. A
typical day entails the students’ arrival at 9:30am to meet up
with their instructor and get-equipped. From 10am to noon, the
lift operates to provide access to the slope. After an hour lunch,
it’s back out to the slope, for another two hours of
instruction, before day’s end. In
addition, we host several Family Sleepover Weekends, allowing the
entire family to experience the great out-of-doors, together.
Participation is based on approval by our Medical or Nursing
Director, and availability, as we operate on a first-come,
first-serve basis. There are designated Alumni days for those
students who have aged out of the regular program.
We are incredibly fortunate to have the support of all of our amazing winter volunteers, without whom we would not be able to run the Adaptive Winter Sports Program.
