The mission of the Double H Ranch is to provide specialized programs and year-round support for children and their families dealing with life-threatening illnesses. Our purpose is to enrich their lives and provide camp experiences that are memorable, exciting, fun, empowering, physically safe and medically sound. All programs are FREE of charge and capture the magic of the Adirondacks. The Double H Ranch is a 501 (c) (3) organization. All contributions are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. Co-Founded by Charles R. Wood and Paul Newman.
Double H Ranch believes that everything we do is about kids and camp. This is why we call our guiding principles of safety and fun the Camp Compass.
Be a Kid
Double H Ranch operates with the intent of putting our campers and families first. We are proudly honest and transparent with every decision made. We can confidently assure that every step taken is to most effectively serve children with serious illness and their families so that they can Be a Kid.
Safety is a major factor in childhood; it’s no different at camp. Our staff and volunteers are trained with the tools required to provide the utmost quality of care for our campers and families. We provide the highest standards of excellence and quality assurance in all areas, so that the intricacies of medical illness do not diminish the excitement and wonder of having limitless fun.
Every set of hands make the work lighter and the applause louder. We place a high value on volunteerism and community partnerships. Our pursuit of the greatest, safest camper experience will always include recruitment and retention of caring and qualified volunteers.
Believe in Giving
Double H Ranch is in the business of giving kids and their families’ unforgettable experiences. We strive to offer something similar with our donors, from camper sponsorships to planned giving, the legacy of each gift and the person or company who shares it, lives on in spoken, printed, and beloved recognition. The art of giving back is an essential key to our success.
Make it Possible
Children are our greatest example of inclusivity, inviting friends to join them and creating more opportunities for shared accomplishments and experiences. We approach our work at Double H Ranch in the same way – diligently working to create ways for every member of a family to not only participate, but to find ways to achieve individual success and a new sense of empowerment.
Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
The Double H Ranch is a non-discriminatory organization committed to inclusion and equity. Our organization strives to ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, age, cultural background, ethnicity, faith, gender, gender identity, ideology, income, national origin, race, sexual orientation, or any other identifying label is accepted and has the opportunity to reach their full potential with dignity.
Our core values set the foundation for celebrating our campers, volunteers, staff and entire Double H Ranch community, as well as maintaining a safe and inclusive environment in all aspects of the work we do.
Double H Ranch families, campers, staff and volunteers may face systemic barriers, and through our mission we seek to create equitable, accessible opportunities for all populations in our service. We celebrate and honor the diverse perspectives of our community and are committed to continually providing an inclusive environment. We believe this is essential to providing the best possible experience for everyone at Double H Ranch.
While we strive to do our best, we know that we still have a lot to learn, and we are ready to do the work. We have taken the following actions and promise to continue to set goals to advance equity and inclusivity within the Double H Ranch community:
• Formed a DEI Committee with at least one representative from each department within the year-round staff to keep DEI at the center of our efforts and continuously evaluate and improve equity and inclusion at Double H Ranch.
• Instituted DEI Training for our year-round staff, seasonal staff and volunteers and we plan to increase this training as we move forward.
• Implemented a Double H Ranch Inclusion Policy to outline our continued commitment to creating an inclusive and diverse environment in all facets of the organization.
• Encouraged staff recruitment strategies to reflect the needs of our population.
• Designated the use of gender-neutral bathrooms through camp facility
• Surveyed staff, volunteer, camper & family program attendees to gain feedback on success and growth opportunities of Inclusion Policy.
• Evaluate our Core Values to ensure that they are centered around equity and inclusion.
• Conduct an audit of the organization, by an outside contractor, of our DEI initiatives and how we can improve
Our team is discussing how we can continue to educate ourselves on how we can strengthen our DEI initiatives. Racism has no place in this world. We promise to do our part to listen, learn and act in hopes of eradicating racism and discrimination from society. We recognize that real change requires a participatory process, collective conversation, and contemplation along with intentional surrender and sharing of power.
