Counselor Stories: Friends That Become Family

Few treasures in life are as precious as the family we choose.  The friends that become family and a closeness that becomes a brotherhood.  Who would’ve guessed, twenty years ago, that what seemed to be an incredible opportunity to help some very amazing children at the Double H Ranch would also foster friendships that would grow into a small, close knit family.  Over the last decade a group of us have gotten together every winter to celebrate our long-lasting friendship and to reminisce on the summer magic that brought us all together.  Reflecting on our years at Double H, experiencing the time of our lives while creating a euphoric environment of love and acceptance and for many campers a home away from home.  Sharing in the accomplishments of our younger heroes, comforting each other in times of sadness and laughing so much you thought that time would stop.

Time has passed, Double H is celebrating its 25th anniversary, families have started, and “real world” careers have been built.  Most of us are either losing our hair or watching it grow in white.  Yet, when we gather in the heart of the winter for a weekend that passes as quickly as a summer session, we are transported to an oasis of camaraderie, the joy of youthfulness, and the comfort of the family we choose.  We are all so grateful for Double H for being the place where it all started and wish for its continued success for many years to come!

  2. These guys were camp counselors when I was a camper. If only they truly knew the memories they helped make for special kids. I love and appreciate all who made my summer vacations to HH happen. I hope to one day take my daughter and volunteer at the camp that inspired me so much.

  3. Luke is 17 now!! Luke learned to ski on the weekends when he was 6. We continue to ski and will always be grateful to our Double H Family. We cannot wait to give back and volunteer at the camp when we are able!! Congratulations to the gifts you have given to so many!!

  4. I can’t believe it’s been 25 years I remember the first time I went to camp all the way back in1993
