Aquatics Director

Job Summary:

The mission of the Double H Ranch is to provide specialized programs and year-round support for children and their families dealing with life-threatening illnesses.  The Aquatics Director meets the mission of Double H by implementing safe fishing, boating, and swimming programs for our campers.  The Aquatics Director is responsible for designing and implementing a program area that promotes safety and fun.  The Aquatics Director is also responsible for providing direct feedback to the lifeguard team and creating a positive work environment and is responsible for overseeing the waterfront, indoor, and outdoor pools.

Main Responsibilities:

Pre Session:

  • Provide the Assistant Camp Director, Programs with a detailed plan of activities that will be implemented during the session. These plans should be engaging, adapted to meet campers’ needs and COVID protocols, fit into the theme of the session, and allow for flexibility. Plans must include all-weather programming.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Camp Director, Programs/Activities Coordinator to create purchase orders to ensure the program has adequate supplies for the week
  • Create a clear and organized lifeguard schedule that is shared with the lifeguard staff and Assistant Camp Director, Programs. This schedule should include daily rotations and camp wide events.
  • Evaluate aquatics areas and supplies for safety and readiness

During Session:

  • Provide safe supervision of lifeguards, campers, staff, and volunteers while at aquatic areas
  • Awareness of campers’ personal fears and concerns
  • Follow the model of Intentional Programming set forth by the Leadership Team
  • Act as a role model and set an example for campers, staff, and volunteers
  • Provide regular and positive feedback to campers, staff, and volunteers
  • Ensure that all campers, staff, and volunteers are practicing proper hygiene and following COVID safety protocols while at the Aquatics program area.
  • Ensure that all supplies are safely stored, maintained, and disinfected between uses (when possible). Remove and report items in disrepair.
  • Close the Aquatic areas during inclement weather and report decision to the Assistant Camp Director, Programs
  • Facilitate programming for cabins who have had their rotation cancelled
  • Required to be at program area whenever scheduled
  • Required to help leadership team set up and facilitate camp-wide programming when available and able
  • Encouraged to help create virtual content to keep campers connected who could not be on camp this summer
  • Attend and give updates at weekly Activity Leader meetings

 Post Session:

  • Attend and give updates at weekly staff meetings
  • Ensure that all supplies are safely stored, maintained, and disinfected. Remove and report items in disrepair
  • Review previous session activities and modify based on success of the activity
  • Submit program area evaluations to Assistant Camp Director, Programs

Supervision:

  • Complete skills assessment for lifeguards prior to Session 1.
  • Train, manage, and support the lifeguard staff. Provide opportunities for staying current on lifesaving techniques
  • Hold daily check in/debrief meetings with lifeguards during each day of the session
  • Meet with lifeguards weekly to provide them with an opportunity to give feedback and receive feedback
  • Formally evaluate staff twice throughout the summer
  • Provide constructive feedback for staff and remain professional in regards to staff feedback
  • Communicate staff issues with the Assistant Camp Director, Programs
  • Establish a routine for campers, staff, and volunteers when they attend the program area
  • Use appropriate behavior management at all times
  • Monitor children’s health on a daily basis: reporting any symptoms to the medical staff

Safety:

  • Report any acts of maltreatment, neglect and/or any other violation of camp policies immediately to the Camp Director
  • Ensure that American Camping Association standards, SeriousFun Children’s Network standards and NYS Department of Health standards are being implemented and followed
  • Must complete all medical and employment forms
  • Must adhere to all safety rules and teach campers what those rules are
  • Be a role model for all staff and volunteers
  • Treat other staff and volunteers with professionalism and respect
  • Be aware and knowledgeable of all Department of Health Regulations and be able to respond to questioning from Department of Health
  • Facilitate swim tests for staff, campers, and volunteers
  • Communicate with Director of Facilities re: indoor/outdoor pool maintenance and needs
  • Follow all COVID-19 precautions; including appropriate mask wearing, social distancing, and hand washing both in and out of session

Staff Team:

  • Actively participate in staff training
  • Support other members of the staff
  • Be a role model for all staff and volunteers
  • Treat other staff and volunteers with professionalism and respect
  • Accept supervision and guidance from staff and supervisors

Qualifications:

  • At least 21 years of age
  • At least three prior seasons as a lifeguard or equivalent role
  • Complete and pass our background check protocol
  • CPR/First Aid/AED/Lifeguard/WSI/Lifeguard Management certification required

 Essential Functions:

  • Must be able to provide complete, independent personal care for yourself in regards to: hygiene maintenance & medical needs & medication administration.
  • Must be able to provide personal care for campers including: bathing, toileting, changing diapers, dressing, transferring children out of their wheelchair, etc.
  • Must be able to physically and mentally able to work 12 hour shifts with limited breaks.
  • Must possess the strength and stamina to maintain constant supervisor of campers for the duration of the season.
  • Be able to push, pull, lift and carry items up to 50 pounds.
  • Be able to supervise and instruct campers; this will require the ability to walk, sit, climb, kneel, crouch and stand.
