The Residential Nurse will work under the supervision of the Nursing Director, Medical Director, as well as the Operations Director.
Minimum Qualifications:
Valid New York State RN or NP license
Valid BLS certification
Professional Liability Insurance
Pediatric or Hematology/Oncology nursing experience (preferred)
PALS certified
Certification / experience in IV therapies including central access
Function:
Participate in daily camper life to provide nursing care. Facilitate a medically sound and safe camp experience for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. Function as cabin nurse overseeing 1-2 cabins per session as determined by the Nursing Director based on need.
Responsibilities:
- Attend full staff orientation
- Assist Nursing Director with medical orientation of staff
- Assist Nursing Director with medical orientation for weekly volunteers
- Assist Nursing Director with camper application review as needed
- Act as resource for volunteer nurses
- Act as resource for summer staff and volunteers
- Preparation and administration of routine scheduled medications to campers
- Methods of administration include: Oral, IM, SQ, IV, topical, ophthalmic, and inhalation
- Administration of various infusions such as: IV fluids for hydration, Desferal, Factor and antibiotics
- Care, maintenance and use of various types of Central Lines
- Administration of medications in accordance with the standing orders and Health Care Plan, or as ordered by physician
- Administration of first aid care as detailed in the standing orders
- Documentation and record keeping as outlined in the Health Care Plan
- Monitoring the health of the campers and staff in their care (cabin), as well as assisting with other campers and staff as needed
- Communicate with Unit Leader and counselors about special medical needs of campers
- Accompany campers when offsite as necessary. Administer medications, provide nursing care, and assessments
- Provide feedback and information to parents with regard to the health of their child, as needed
- Reside on camp for summer
- Cover shifts in Body Shop (camp health center) during high volume times assisting staff nurses
- Cover overnight call to be second RN in Body Shop in the event of a camper staying the night in the Body Shop
- Accompany campers being transported by ambulance as designated by the Nursing Director
- As directed by the Nursing Director oversee medical needs in the event that the Nursing Director is off site
- Follow camp standards of confidentiality with regard to camper and staff medical records
- Practice universal precautions as outlined in the Health Care Plan
